About the calculation of laptop battery

By admin, October 29, 2009 9:08 pm

Maybe a lot of friends would be more focused on the battery “mAh” when choose the laptop, “mAh” is a battery capacity unit, in the general purchases, many friends might think the laptop battery will have a longer battery life if the mAh is large. But the actual situation is not the case, in a notebook battery can often be seen “six-cell 4400mAh”, “4-cell 2200mAh” nominal value batteries, over time, everyone thought 4400mAh or 2200mAh capacity directly determines the notebook working hours.

For everyone here seems strange to introduce a unit of “Wh”, which said it strange is because many friends are already familiar with the “mAh” battery nominal capacity. The relationship of “Wh” and “mAh” is: Wh/V*1000 = mAh, should be noted that the laptop’s own power consumption of electrical measurement unit should be “Watt.”

Since then, we can learn that the local should be noted is not “mAh” but the “Wh” as well as the voltage when choose the laptop battery. For example, the same 4800mAh lithium-ion battery under different voltage 10.8V and 11.1V reflects the ability of life is different, and this difference stems from its “Wh” different. By calculating we can get the following equation:

4800/1000 × 10.8 = 51.84 (Wh)

4800/1000 × 11.1 = 53.28 (Wh)

Can be clearly seen 4800mAh 11.1V Li-ion laptop battery life has an advantage in battery capacity. Therefore, do not just pay attention to “mAh” when choose the notebook computer batteries. With a little calculation of this parameter will be able to help you the right choice for a high performance notebook battery products.

Need to note is that many manufacturers said the nominal time is 3 to 5 hours, but this life time is measured at a very low system efficiency, in actual use, the laptop battery life could also have reduced significantly based on use in different ways. Therefore, the general use laptop able to meet 2 to 3 hours. High-profile is important, but do not forget what is the design for when choose the notebook computer, that is – moving.

The proper use of laptop can extend laptop battery life (part 1)

Laptop battery life is indeed a headache issue to us, although we can not make any changes to laptop battery, but we can improve the utility by changing the habits of notebook using, so that battery life is lengthened. These more than 10 tips below is the practical method prepared for notebook users to extend battery life.

1. Defrag regularly

Defragging your hard drive that allows to work faster, make the hard disk defrag on a regular basis to maintain effective state, of course, defrag when using an external power supply. The disk response speed become quicker and working time become shorter, it will certainly reduce the power consumption to extend laptop battery life.

2. To reduce the screen brightness

Most of the laptop screen brightness can be adjusted, there are some even can reduce the CPU’s operating frequency. When using the battery to reduce these parameters can be more effective to extend battery life.

3. Turn off background programs

There are some programs running in the background, although not directly see these programs running, but all consume CPU processing power, of course, consume battery power. The best way is to turn off all unnecessary background processes in order to prolong battery life.

4. Reduce the peripheral equipment

USB devices (including your mouse), Wi-Fi wireless connections are able to consume battery power, when the equipment is not in use, the best way is to pull down or masked. There are some equipment, such as the iPod will begin to charge when connecting with the computer,  be careful not to do it when using the battery-powered laptop .

5. Adding more memory

More memory means that notebooks do not be so dependent on virtual memory. Virtual memory is built on the hard drive, obviously access memory power consumption is lower, so more read the memory rather than the hard drive, this can reduce power consumption. However, adding memory also can trigger the issue of energy consumption, so the computer often use virtual memory, the most the time to consider adding memory.

6. Donot use drive too much

Although the hard drive power consumption relatively larger, but in fact  the energy consumption of drive is more in the eyes. Even when not in use, CD-ROM is still rotate, consume energy. If you can find a suitable virtual CD-ROM files, through a virtual drive to read, obviously much less power consumption.

7. To keep the interface clean

We proposed here, every few months to clean up laptop battery metal interface, you can wipe by a cloth soiled with alcohol. This can ensure that the battery inside the battery can be more effectively transmitted to the various components to consume.

8. Take good care of the battery

Take good care of the battery is not to shelved, but regular check it out. Do not let the battery fully charged do nothing for a long, long time. Once charged the battery power, you should at least fully used once every two or three weeks. Of course, do not let your battery completely consume the electricity, it is the way to deal with the old battery memory effect.

Laptop battery frequently encountered problems

By admin, October 22, 2009 9:03 pm

Q: How to preserve the battery if I don’t use for a long-term?

A: Charge or discharge to about 50%, and then placed in dry, temperature of 15 to 25 degrees Celsius to preservation, either the temperature is too high and too low are easy to accelerate cell aging.

Q: Is that ok if laptop battery is not removed when using the power supply?

A: It does not matter, the laptop battery has a protection circuit, it will not continue to charge when full.

Q: My battery is now run only a very short time, how should I do?

A: If you’ve been in the frequent use of the battery, then it belongs to cell aging, which can not be avoided, you can only consider to change a new battery or replace batteries; If you did not use battery a long-term, may also lead to this phenomenon, this time need to completely discharge (until fail to boot up) and then full recharge, repeated several times to activate the battery.

Q: Could I use other laptop’s power adapter?

A: No, there are three obstacles, the first is the notebook computer manufacturers use various different voltage, such as IBM are 16V, COMPAQ mostly 18.5V, SONY part of the model is 19.5V, they are inconsistent. The second is different laptops need different current, from 2A to 5.4A, a small machine needs small current. The third is the various manufacturers notebook power adapter interfaces are different, it is difficult to general use. Therefore, at present there hasn’t a common power adapter to all notebooks.

Q: How to charge the new machine? How do I maintain the battery?

A: Lithium battery need to maintain a certain electromotive force to maintain its internal chemical activity. Therefore, you need to achieve full charge and discharge, in general, the first three times can be a period of about six hours of charge time, charge electric to 100% if there is no time. To avoid point charge, charge timely when less than 10%, and not to be exhausted, that would be bad to the battery; also try not to charge when higher than 60%. Battery don’t use for a long time should applied to about 50% of electricity and preserve at room temperature and dry environment.

Q: For the first use of the battery, should I charge 12 hours the former three times?

A: This is completely unnecessary, because the current notebook computers have improved power management circuitry and charging management system, when the battery reached saturation, the control circuit will automatically switch to the circuit state, so even if charge a long time is also to no avail.

Q: In order to prevent memory effect, we should run out before charge?

A: Discharge the battery is not only unnecessary before every charge, but also harmful. Practice has proved that the depth discharge of the battery will shorten the life, it is recommended to charge the battery when about 10%. When the battery power is still more than 30%, you’d better not to charge, because the memory effect more or less does indeed exist.

SHARP introduced the industry’s thinnest solar cell modules

By admin, October 22, 2009 9:01 pm

SHARP, Japan released the industry’s thinnest 0.8mm solar battery module LR0GC02, will be applied to all types of small carry equipment in the future.
The built-in ultra-thin solar cell modules produced by polysilicon, but not recently products supply to the Japanese telecommunications operator solar energy KDDI mobile phone, they are improved versions.

LR0GC02 using small semiconductor packaging technology to reduce the volume, size is 67.5*41mm, the maximum electricity output power up to 300mW, as part of the auxiliary power supply to carry equipment to achieve energy savings according to environmental needs. Because of its output voltage is 4.5V, therefore, can charge for the lithium batteries.

In addition, this module can also be based on demand of the manufacturers to change the surface of the electrode solar cell modules,  so you can beyond the design of solar cell products available in the market, the future is expected to be used to create more diversified products.
